What to Expect
ONCE YOU’VE COMPLETED YOUR CONSULTATION, AND SCHEDULED YOUR FIRST COUPLES THERAPY APPOINTMENT, HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:
Couples session #1
Your first session you and your partner will meet with your therapist together. This first session is focused on information and history taking. The therapist will ask you questions about the issues that have brought you to therapy, what you’d like to see change, and also many questions about the history of your relationship. These questions will help your therapist get a picture of your strengths and some of your history together as a couple. It is very important for the therapist to understand your goals for therapy as it will help to understand when therapy will end. Our approach is very goal oriented.
Next, the therapist will meet with each of you individually in your own separate sessions. These individual sessions will help the therapist to hear from each of you about what you see as some of the issues in the relationship. The therapist will also ask about your personal history to get a grasp on how that relates to the way you interact with your partner. These sessions are confidential, and the therapist will not share things disclosed in these individual sessions with your partner.
After you each meet with your therapist individually, you’ll come back for another couples session. Before this session your therapist will send you a Relationship Checkup - an extensive background questionnaire designed to help the therapist get a really good picture of where some of the issues are happening in the relationship. In this second couples session your couples therapist will do most of the talking and from all of the information they have gathered from the previous sessions and the Relationship Checkup, will outline the work ahead. Your therapist will help you understand the focus of the upcoming sessions and answer any questions you might have. Our therapists are very solution-focused, and our goal is not to keep you in therapy forever, but instead give you the tools you need to transform your relationship, and send you on your way to enjoy your partner and the new relationship you’ve both worked to create.
